What is the Mission Statement?

Crown Jewel Club is a non-profit organization that empowers at-risk girls with basic etiquette and social skills essential to building self-esteem and self-confidence for academic achievement and overall success in life.

How many girls have graduated?

Over 500 girls have completed the Crown Jewel Club core program.

How old is the program?

Crown Jewel Club was created in 2005.

Where are the schools?

East Los Angeles, near USC, Inglewood, and in Pasadena.

Why 5th grade?

The fifth grade is a very transitional year for girls preparing to enter middle school, where they may be asked to join gangs, take drugs, or engage in sexual activity. Crown Jewel Club takes a preventative approach and provides girls with support, while helping them build self confidence so that they may make healthy decisions during their adolescence and teenage years.

Why just girls?

The inaugural school, Trinity Street Elementary, originally approached Jane Phillips to teach the class to their 5th grade girls. CJC plans to create a similar program for boys called Knights of the Crown by 2013.

What happens after the girls go to middle school?

Each year, CJC holds a Year End Party to reunite all Crown Jewel Club members. At this event, the Soroptomists award a computer to an 8th grade girl through an essay competition. A scholarship will be offered to a 12th grade CJC graduate as well.

What ethnic group do you target?

We do not target any specific ethnic group.

How long is the session?

Seven weeks.

What do you teach in the classes?

  • Introductions (shaking hands, eye contact)
  • Basic Manners (“Please” and “Thank You”)
  • Writing Thank You notes (when to write them and proper format)
  • Personal Hygiene and Grooming
  • Table Manners
  • Table Settings

Every class includes:

  • Jewel Book – The girls write answers to particular questions that help empower them and build their self-esteem.
  • Mining for Gems – The girls paste magazine pictures into their Gem Book. The pictures convey things they like, places they want to visit, and careers they have an interest in. This allows the girls to develop a vision for the future.
  • Healthy Snack – The girls learn about nutrition, create fun snacks like Lady Bugs (apples with peanut butter and raisins) and practice table manners weekly.
  • Dreams and Goals–We show the girls pictures of places we have traveled which give them reason to work hard to pursue their dreams.
  • We teach the girls self-nurturing skills for their self-esteem.
